The Life Story of Yolande Faye Hawes
February 12, 1952 the good lord dropped an angel from the sky. Hername was Yolande Faye Hawes and she was a gift God bestowed upon the union of Chester and Wylene Hawes. She was loved dearly by her
parents and grandparents as well as by her two sisters Yvette and Yvonne. It was easy to love Yolande.
Hers was a gentle and giving spirit with a streak of lively in herthat spiced up any room she found herself in.
She attended Birmingham Public Schools and received her high
school diploma from Parker High where she was member of Future Teachers of America. She graduated from
Stillman College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts. She later received her Master's from Alabama State University. Though she had aspired to be a teacher she chose another path to serve moving to New Jersey where she began a career in social services.
Family was the most important thing in her life, possibly because she lost her parents so young. She lost her father Chester while in high school and her mother Wylene passed from this world when she was twentysix. When her mother died she quit her job and movedhome to Birmingham, as she put it so her sisters would always havea place to call home in Birmingham. She loved Birmingham and wanted her and sisters to have a place there.
Her loving spirit and need to provide for others led her to adopt her daughter Danielle. Danielle was the apple of her eye. She loved her with all her heart and soul.
She became a member of the Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in June of 1985 where she joined her cousin Debra and her sister Yvette as proud sorors. As in everything she ever did she gave thesorority her all and was known as a devoted member. She was activeuntil she became ill several years ago.
She loved a good time and was always ready for a game of bid. Mostof all she loved her grandchildren Dania, De'Nariah and Daniya. She loved to dress them up, often putting them in the same outfits making them look like her little angels.
Yolande retired from the United States Economic Employment Opportunity Office after being employed there for many years. She was a lifelong member Sardis Baptist Church in Birmingham where she served on the Usher Board. Ushering was a beloved part of her life and even her illness required her to move to Atlanta to live with her sister Yvonne she made it back to Sardis to attend church and serve as an usher every chance she got.
Yolande was preceded in death by her parents Wylene and Chester and her granddaughter Dania.
She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter Danielle, her granddaughters De'Nariah (aged 13) and Daniya (aged 10) of Birmingham, Alabama, her sisters Yvette Hawes Hawkins (Erskine) and
Yvonne Hawes, her cousins Melvin Foster, Debra Hawes Crook, Sheryl Davenport, Eric Foster , Michael Foster, Rori Batts, Rob Batts, and Wilethia J. Shields and her niece Carol Drake and great nephew Daniel Love, nephews Erskine Hawkins, III MD and Edmund Hawkins and a host of others relatives and friends.
