James Scott
April 15, 1950 – May 19, 2025
Willie "Will" James Scott was born on April 15, 1950, to the late Mr. Sam Scott, Sr. and Mrs. Maggie Dell Scott, in Gastonburg, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Scott Jr.
Will was educated in the Birmingham City School System. He received his Associate Degree from Lawson State Community College. He bravely served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned the designation of Expert Marksman (M-14, M-16).
After over 20 years of dedicated service, Will retired from ABF Freight Line. Known by many as a devoted outdoorsman, he loved to fish and hunt. His catches were often shared with the community, and his friendly yard rivalry with his neighbor became a neighborhood tradition.
Will was united in marriage to Ethel Russell Scott for 38 years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he led his family with strength and quiet wisdom. His pride in his family and their accomplishments was unmatched. He was respected by many and loved by all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memory:
• His devoted wife, Ethel Russell Scott
• Daughters: Tonya Scott, Leta Michelle Scott Gulley, Whitney Woodard
• Son: Weaver Hawkins (Kristy)
• Ten grandchildren: Tiffany, Teayra, Tynisha, Ashley, Alexis, Marshall, Ellery, Charlee, Roxie, and Weaver V
• Eight great-grandchildren
• Eight siblings: Ernestine, Rose, Ruby, Doris, Denita, Debra, Bob, and Barry
• A host of relatives, extended family, and many dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in honor of Will's life and legacy to A Promise to Help, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth and families throughout Alabama's Black Belt region.
This organization holds special significance to our family, as Will was born and raised in Wilcox County a place that deeply influenced his values, resilience, and lifelong dedication to helping others. Your contribution will continue his legacy by providing meaningful resources to the communities that helped shape him.
