Obituary

Mr. Warner Baxter Walker, Sr., was born on October 9, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Samuel and Sallie Walker. He graduated from A. H. Parker High School in 1948, where he met the love of his life and future wife, Martha Mays. To this union were born four loving children: Linda, Margaret, Patricia and Warner, Jr. Warner retired from the U. S. Postal Service after thirty-seven years as a motor vehicle operator. He was a dedicated and loyal employee. During his career he received the "Million Mile Award" from the National Safety Council. He was an avid fisherman. He was the foundation of his family. He was the president of the South Goldwire Estates Community Block Club. He joined the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. John T. Porter. He was a member of the Young Men Senior Usher Board. He remained an active and dedicated member until his health declined. After a long and courageous battle of Alzheimers, our loved one was called home on June 26, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Readus and two brothers, Raymond Walker and Samuel Walker, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife of sixty-seven years, Martha B. Mays Walker; two daughters, Margaret (William) King (Hoover, AL) and Patricia (Alfred) Terry (Fairfield, AL); one son, Warner (Morlyn) Walker, Jr. (Elk Grove, CA); three sisters, Evelyn (Rubbie) White, Ceola Baker and Barbara (Richard) Young; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. Family Hour will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Smith & Gaston Southside Chapel. Funeral service will be held Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, 1101 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive S.W., Birmingham, AL 35211. Rev. John L. Cantelow, III, Pastor. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. A very special thank you to UAB Hospital; Dr. Andrew Duxbury and Comfort Care Hospice (Melissa, Pat, Rev. Bart and Sonia); caregivers, Ceola Baker, Jimmie Dew and Sherry Green for the loving care provided. Smith & Gaston Southside directing.
