Vergie Benson Spears was born May 14, 1947, to the late Dock & Allie Benson in Birmingham, Alabama. Vergie was the sixth of seven children
born to this union.


Vergie confessed Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. A.L. Lawson at Christian Valley Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the Sunday School, Mass & Sanctuary Choirs, and the Junior Usher Board serving with Sis. Drucilla Royal until becoming the caregiver for her husband.


Vergie attended The Public School System in Birmingham, Al, Hudson Elementary and graduating from G.W. Carver High School. She furthered
her education by attending The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University majoring in Business Education.


Vergie met Donald Spears in 1971 while working at Alabama Power Company and later wed in Holy Matrimony in 1973, and to this union two
sons were born.


Vergie began her career at Lawson State Community College by becoming the Director of Human Resources in 1977, and served for 35 years, retiring in 2012. She prides herself on her fondest memories and forever friendships turning into family with people like, Perry Ward, Sharon Crews, Cassandra Hollings, Roberta Cottrell, Sheri Davis, Bruce Crawford, Sandra Howard, Randy Glaze, Karl Pruitt, Janice Williams, Janice Orange, Charlsie Cook, Shirley Floyd, Mattie Crawford, Chief Walter Williams, Kesha James, Darren Allen, and Cynthia Anthony and many others.


She was preceded in death by five siblings, Harold, Gwen, Leonard, Sadie, and Marian.


She leaves to cherish her forever memories; a loving husband Donald Spears; children Marlon (Mildred), Dominique, and Stephen Spears; grandchildren Kimya and Karmen Spears; bonus children Donna, Leonard Jr, Misti, Myron, Jasmine, Cedric, Roberta, Aisha, Rhoda, and Kevin; bonus grandchildren Ciniyah, Keshawn, Kyron, Casey, Morgan, Maliq, Taylor, and Nevaeh; God Children Kelsey (Tiffany) and Carlos Commings; brother Dorkas L. Benson ( Delois), of Strongsville, Ohio; sister/niece Cynthia Benson of Brooklyn, New York; brother-in- law Jerry Spears (Sadie) of Hamilton, Alabama; sisters-in-law Wilma Trulove of Kansas City, Missouri, Maxine Standifer (Harold) of Smithfield, Mississippi, Margret Terrell of Huntsville, Alabama; Ya-Ya Sisters Beverly Caver (James), Carolyn Kelly (Anthony), and Gwendolyn Mason all of Birmingham; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church family. Vergie will be forever remembered most for her friendly, witty, yet blunt, but loving, welcoming,"Classy & Sassy" attitude.
