Rubin Earl
Grant
August 3, 1957 – June 18, 2025
Rubin Earl Grant left a legacy of loving God, loving family, and loving people when he died on June 18, 2025. His caring and curious spirit were evident to everyone, from his family and friends to the athletes and other figures he interviewed. He is survived by his wife Wardinia "Dena" (Long) Grant, daughter Krystal (Evan) Folkestad, sisters Bonita (Manuel Jr.) Chaney and Yolanda (Glenn Sr.) Holmes, one grandson, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and others. Rubin is preceded in death by his father Albert Tyler Grant Jr., his mother Delorious Jordan Grant, and his brothers Roderick Grant and Alvin Grant.
Rubin was born in Montgomery, AL, on August 3, 1957. In high school, he played baseball, and realized he would have more longevity in a career as a writer. He became the first black sports editor of the University of Alabama's Crimson White student newspaper. In his four decades of journalism, he was honored by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and the Birmingham Barons Hall of Fame.
While in college, he met Dena of Birmingham, AL, and they married in 1980. Together, they enjoyed supporting Krystal's musical dreams, serving their church, encouraging their neighbors, and watching their grandson run.
Loved ones are invited to a celebration of Rubin's life at Mountain Brook Community Church on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the funeral, a visitation will be 10:00-10:45 a.m. The viewing will be at Smith and Gaston on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Voice of the Martyrs (persecution.org) to serve persecuted Christians around the world.
