Roy C
Holmes
September 30, 1955 – November 4, 2022
Roy Campanella Holmes was born on September 30, 1955, to the late Robert and Lucille Holmes, Sr. He confessed Christ at an early age while attending First Baptist Church Ensley.
Roy was introduced to sports as a toddler by his father. He played baseball for a neighborhood team started by his father, calling himself the team manager. Roy attended Western Olin High School, where he played football. He graduated with his class of 1975. Upon his graduation from high school, he would go on to play football at Alabama A&M University. Roy continued his love of football by playing for the first Semi-Pro USFL Stallions team in Birmingham. Roy was a dedicated Cowboys fan, who would never miss watching any of their games.
Later, he rededicated his life to team Jesus when he joined St. James Baptist Christian Center, Church Ensley. Roy loved his church and pastor. He served as a deacon and van driver, until he became ill. On November 4, 2022, he made his last touchdown as he transitioned from earthly life to taking his wings.
He leaves to cherish his memories: three brothers, Lee Oscar Smith, Robert, Jr. (Camelia), Holmes, and James Edward Holmes; one sister, Barbara McGhee; two nieces, Dana (Denver) Betts and Desmond (Steve) Dale; three nephews, Eron Jennings, Stuart Holmes, and Jermaine Holmes; a very devoted cousin, Mary Alice (Jerry ) Cockrell; and a host of other uncles, aunts, cousins, and great-nephews and nieces. Roy told us that he fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith!
