On September 7, 1914 in Morgan County (Hartselle, Alabama), Rosemary Madeline McDaniels was born to Professor Caston Nathaniel McDaniels and Orrie Lee Thomas McDaniels. Rosemary is the fifth and only survivor of seven children. Following graduation from Inter Urban High School in Fairfield, Alabama she attended Miles College where, after two years of study she met and married George Roy Johnston, a widower with three children. From this union were born seven children: Herman Kenneth, Nathaniel, Rosemary, Gladys, Anthony (deceased), McDaniels, and Gayle Denise (deceased). Rosemary never made any distinction between the siblings, never referring to the three oldest children Roy Jr., (deceased) Mildred, (deceased) and Raymond Johnston (deceased), as step children or step sister and brothers. Their mother's picture was always on display for them to remember their mother and others to know who she was. All ten sisters and brothers were raised together in a family of love. Reading was always of paramount importance in her home. As a result Rosemary began collecting books to successfully establish libraries at the Bethlehem House located in Kingston and St. James A.M.E. Church in Avondale. In addition to the establishment of libraries, Rosemary addressed the lack of social activities for Negro children during this time of segregation through use of her creativity and developed activities for which teenagers could engage. She organized parties, games, wiener roasts, table tennis, cake walks, backyard parties, book clubs, and all sorts of meaningful activities the young people enjoyed at her home. Rosemary was always an active PTA worker, wherever her children attended school. As president of Parker High School's PTA in the early 1950's she questioned the reasoning behind the uniform requirements consisting of army wool pants in the winter with dress shirts for boys, blue dresses for girls and white dresses when they became seniors, mandated only for Parker High School students. Finding resolution to this inequity became a task of hers. Through her efforts, the uniform requirement for Parker High School students was eventually dropped. After raising ten children, Rosemary decided it was time to go back and complete her college education. She pursued her college education with honors and received her degree from Miles college in1958. Her first work assignment was at Butler Elementary School. Continuing her focus on education she began studies on a Masters Degree, studying at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Peabody College of Education and Human Development (now a part of Vanderbilt University) and traveling abroad to study the British System of Education. Employed by the Birmingham Board of Education throughout her career, she later retired from McElwain Elementary. Rosemary utilized her creativity and talents in many ways. A gifted mezzo soprano, she was a popular singer at weddings, programs, and events. She was featured on local radio shows including "Moments of Meditation" and "The Bradford Hour" sponsored by Bradford Funeral home. Rosemary travelled across the state singing to raise money for the Miles College. She was also an active member of many clubs and organizations and served as President of Club Imperial and Chair of the Club Imperial Debutante Presentation. At her passing, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Club Imperial, Alabama Education Association, Birmingham Education Association, Club LaPerecious, Our Lady Rosary Sodality and VIP of Holy Family Church.
