Robert Earl
Lee
December 23, 1947 – January 5, 2023
Robert Earl Lee was born December 23, 1947, at Holy Family Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late George William Lee and Scottie Beatrice Green. He confessed life at an early age and joined Abyssinia Baptist Church. Later, he joined and served faithfully at Peace Baptist Church, Pratt City, under the leadership of Pastor Major Burrell. He remained a member there until his death on January 5, 2023. Robert was affectionately known as "General Robert E. Lee" by his pastor and the church family.
He loved to write and became well known through the city for his many plays and skits. He was also a member of the male chorus and the combined choir. Robert knew the Bible very well and was a faithful member of a Wednesday night Bible study group.
Robert was educated in the Birmingham public school system where he attended Council Elementary School and Western Olin High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic and advanced to the rank of Sergeant. He received an honorable discharge from the Air Force.
Robert later graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, with a degree in elementary education. However, he found passion working in home health throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father, George William Lee, and mother, Scottie Beatrice Stevens, as well as his older brother, Melvin Lee.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Victor Vanburren of Birmingham, Alabama; brother, William (Dionetta) Lee of Huntsville, Alabama; sister Mary (Willie) Thomas of Birmingham, Alabama; best friend, Cordell Adams of Birmingham, Alabama; dearest cousin, Brenda Hudson Jones of Birmingham, Alabama; two loving and supportive aunts, Vera Wade of Detroit, Michigan, and Maude Davis of Wellington, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.
