Rita Faye Nelson, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Diversicare of Oneonta in Oneonta, Alabama,
after a long illness. Rita was 67 years old, and she was known for her bright smile and warm laughter. While she struggled with medical
issues during her life, she will always be remembered for her love of family, how she made people feel and the joy she spread to those
around her.
Rita was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Daniel Lee Nelson and Mary Rose Nelson. She graduated from Ramsey High School
in Birmingham, Alabama, and went on to receive her BA degree from Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University. A long-time
football, fan she frequently made the annual pilgrimage to Tuskegee's homecoming games until late in her life.
Rita moved to Atlanta, Georgia, after graduating college where she worked in the hospitality industry. She soon returned to Birmingham,
where she owned and operated her own dining establishment. Rita's Place offered healthy sandwich alternatives and delicious baked goods
from a location right around the corner from the flagship Nelson Bros. Café. She catered many occasions around town with delicious
sandwiches, cakes and pies, and on occasion, she even supplied product to Nelson Bros. Café. Rita was also a long-time member of
Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.
Rita is survived by: her beloved brother, Napoleon Nelson; nieces, JoAnna Nelson, Tammy Nelson, DeAnna Minard, Antrice Nelson, and
Cameron Lynn Ebron; and her nephews, Derek Nelson and Napoleon Jason Nelson; along with a host of great-nieces and -nephews, cousins,
and beloved friends.
In addition to her mother and father, Rita was preceded in death by her stepbrothers, Daniel Nelson, Jr., and Jesse George Nelson, and her
uncle, Willie Williams, Jr., who died recently in October of 2024.
