Patricia Weaver
Byrd
June 16, 1944 – September 13, 2025
Patricia, affectionately known as Pat, was born in Scuba MS in 1944 to Thomas & Ella Weaver. She was their first born. She was joined by Thomas Jr and Orlando. As the oldest grandchild of Robert Sr. & Willie Lee Weaver, she was often at the family home in Ellsbury Park with her grandmother & aunts which wasn't far from her house. As the family grew, Patricia became the eldest of 33 grandchildren. One of her many memories of being at her grandparents' home was drinking coffee out of the saucer with her grandmother.
Patricia was active in church at a very early age. After learning to play the piano from Ms. Gray she joined the music ministry at Hopewell Baptist Church. She never learned to read music. She was a prodigy that had an ear for music. The Weavers were known for their singing abilities and Patricia served as the pianist. She accompanied her father, Uncle Robert Weaver, and Aunt Olivia Weaver Washington and eventually her aunts Doris and Oyweda who are often mistaken for her sisters. This has been her avocation into this season of her life.
Patricia attended Finley & Lewis schools. She finished A.H. Parker High School in January 1962. She was recognized for her academic ability. She matriculated to The Tuskegee Institute at 16. While at Tuskegee, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She started a legacy among her family where there are now 13 Deltas including her daughter Bettina. We call her the OD, or original Delta.
At Tuskegee, she met Roscoe Byrd, a veterinary student. They eventually married and had the oldest child, Brian. Dr. Byrd joined the medical corps of the US Army, so Patricia became a military wife and traveled to faraway places such as Japan. They brought home their most precious souvenir--Bettina.
She finished her degree at UAB and joined her husband in Boston. They moved to Kansas & California. Patricia taught preschool and elementary school throughout the country.
She moved back to Birmingham, and she spent her career in the Child Support Division of DHR. She retired only after finding out she was going to be a grandmother. James Jr was her greatest joy.
Pat always used her music in whatever job she had and played on Sundays. She was sought after by vocalists who needed someone who knew the standards or if they wanted four-part harmony. She has directed many choirs throughout Birmingham. She would often take her keyboard to the bedside of individuals who were sick or shut in and played at family events such as Christmas eve.
