Mr. Wiley Charles Wattleton, Jr., 76, departed this earthly life on Friday, June 12, 2026 surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born on November 15, 1949 in Birmingham, AL to the late Wiley Wattleton Sr. and Juanita Wattleton Campbell.
He was educated in the public schools of Birmingham, AL and attended Bishop College in Dallas, TX. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who loved people, music, sports, playing golf, cooking and telling a good story.
For many years, he was a faithful member of St. Joseph Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL, where he was ordained as a Deacon and served in the Diaconate ministry, as well as the Trustee Ministry and Chair of the Finance Committee. He also was a mentor to many youth, faithfully serving as a Sunday School Teacher and in Youth Ministry. He later joined the membership of The First Baptist Church of Fairfield, where he continued his joy of teaching Sunday School and fellowship with his beloved Layman’s Group.
Deacon Wattleton was a faithful member until his health began to decline. Deacon Wattleton was a lover of people. No matter where he was, he never met a stranger. He used those skills to provide for his family through his years in sales at Nabisco and Kraft. For Deacon Wattleton, there was nothing more important than family.Everything he did was with his family in mind. After his retirement, his favorite activity was spending time with his grandchildren. Whether it was volleyball matches, dance or piano recitals, birthday celebrations or graduations, Deacon Wattleton was there.Deacon Wattleton embodied what it meant to love others as you love yourself. He consistently demonstrated God’s love for others. Whether through a kind word or his generous spirit, he made sure that he met people at the point of their need. He gave, expecting nothing in return. Anchored by his belief in and love for God, he weathered every storm and valley with grace. Even when his earthly body started to fail, his faith did not.
Deacon Wattleton believed in the importance of staying grounded in his roots and his humble beginnings. He passed his love for family down through the generations of his family. And his legacy of humility, strength, integrity, laughter and love will live on in the generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his sister Erma Mines (Solomon) and brother, Michael Wattleton.
