Obituary

Michael A. Jones was born on March 9, 1955 to the late Otis and Rheutelia Jones in Mobile, AL. Michael confessed his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized and joined Mary Magdalene Baptist Church in Abbeville, AL under the pastorship of Reverend O.L. Gamble.

Michael graduated in 1973 from Abbeville High School. As a high-school student, he was an outstanding athlete, participating in football, basketball and track and field. His athletic superiority also led him to set state records in the 100-meter track and field event. His football abilities, along with his teammates set the stage for Abbeville High School to become state football champions. As an eighth grader, he also earned a spot on the varsity basketball team where his tremendous speed and vertical abilities assisted in securing the win that led to the state basketball championship. Michael also caught the eye of the late great Paul Bear Bryant, Jr. and was recruited to play for The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was also recruited to play football for Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).

Michael's love for sports later became a tool to teach and coach youth basketball for the YMCA of Birmingham, AL and in the Toy Bowl League, sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. As a result of his coaching ability, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School earned the Toy Bowl Championship for 2011-2012.

Not only was Michael an excellent athlete, but he was also a brilliantly outstanding scholar. Under the direction of his mother, Rheutelia Jones, a music teacher employed by the Henry County Education System, Michael was encouraged to use his intellectual abilities and decided to accept an academic scholarship in lieu of a fully paid athletic offer. During his time at The University of Alabama, he became a three-time graduate, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1982, a Master of Arts in Banking and Finance in 1982 and a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration in 1977. Michael also became a member of the Eta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where he served as the Dean of Pledgees.

After graduating from The University of Alabama, Michael's career path began at AmSouth Bank where he worked in credit analysis. He then moved on to work for the Legal Aide Society, where he practiced municipal law, and served as an adjunct business professor at Birmingham Southern College. Michael, along with his wife Juanita, established Securities Capital Corporation, a registered broker dealer and investment banking firm in 1986, making it the oldest African American brokerage and financial services firm in the United States of America. He also holds a multitude of securities licenses. In the mid 1980s, he also founded the Birmingham Chapter of the National Black MBA Association and spearheaded the first regional conference. He was also a founding member of the Birmingham Urban Bankers.

Along with his many achievements, Michael was recently honored by the African American Alumni Network for "being a light on the path for many" and was celebrated for being amongst the first black law graduates from The University of Alabama School of Law. Michael was also a member of several professional organizations, including the Alabama State Bar, Georgia State Bar, Magic City Bar Association and Alabama Lawyer's Association.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Juanita, three children: Nicole Rheutelia Fields (Christian Fields), Travis Alexander Jones and Jeremy D'Angelo Henry Jones. Seven grandchildren: Javeon Fields, Jackson Michael-Lee Jones, Israel D'Sean Jones, Christian James Fields, Jr., Xavier Tristan Fields, Braylon Alexander Jones and Paris Monet Fields. He also leaves to cherish his loyal business partner, Keith Carter (Latrice) and a host of in-laws, relatives and friends.
