Melody Hope
Taylor Wilson
August 13, 1955 – April 26, 2023
Melody Hope Taylor-Wilson passed away on Wednesday morning, April 26, 2023, at her home in McCalla, Alabama. Melody was born on August 13, 1955, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late Lee Daniel and Eva Mae Taylor. Melody and several other students launched the first all-black color guard (flag corps) at Kecoughtan High School, Hampton, Virginia, with the assistance of her teacher and mentor, Ms. Faison. She attended Norfolk State University, where she joined the dance group and developed her passion for dance. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree and continued her education by earning a master's degree in education from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Melody, who was affectionately known as "Hope," relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1982, where she began her thirty-five-year career as a Family and Consumer Science (formerly, Home Economics) curriculum teacher for Carver High School. Hope served in multiple Birmingham City schools, which include: Ensley High School, Jackson- Olin High School, and Parker High School, where she culminated her career. She provided oversight of Parker High School's Family Co-op program, a mentoring initiative for students with career pursuits in education. In 2006, she was recognized by the Birmingham City school system as the 2005-2006 "Teacher of the Year." She took great pride in finding ways to witness to students, despite certain laws created to prevent the sharing of scripture in the schools. Hope established the First Priority Christian Club at Ensley High School, which would meet before and after school to share the message of the gospel and help students in their everyday lives.
Ms. Taylor-Wilson was a member of the Birmingham City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. As a member, her servant's heart and passion for mentoring young women, motivated her to start a group for teenage girls, which met in her home on Saturdays. Melody loved entertaining guests in her home, which she referred to as the "Garden Room." It was an inviting spiritual retreat, where she embraced the Holy Spirit's presence, decorated with her elaborately designed seasonal displays for holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and Kwanzaa. Family and friends could share heartfelt fellowship over freshly baked bread, savory home-cooked meals, delicious hot apple cider, and fervent prayer.
Melody will be forever remembered by: her loving and devoted son, Justin Wilson; her siblings, Christopher Taylor, Angela Taylor-White, and Sharon Taylor; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, students, and friends. She was preceded in death by her older sisters, Sandra Lee Taylor and Melissa Holloway.
