Obituary

Mary Joyce Callier-Colvin will be eulogized on February 4, 2023 at 12:00pm at Thirgood Memorial CME Church, 517 Center Street, Birmingham, Alabama where Rev. George Hill is the Pastor. The public viewing will be held at Smith and Gaston Funeral Home, 102 6 th Avenue SW, Birmingham, Alabama on February 3, 2023, from 12pm until 5 pm.

Ms. Callier-Colvin was a member of Thirgood Memorial Church for more than 55 years. She is the product of the Birmingham school system and a 1953 graduate of Samuel Ullman High School. She is also a 1958 graduate of Miles College with a degree in Science and a 1975 Graduate of Samford University with a Master's degree in Special Education. Mrs. Callier-Colvin retired from the Birmingham City School system after 38 years of service. She then continued to support the school system for an additional 12 years as a tutor, substitute teacher, and volunteer.

Mrs. Callier-Colvin is the second of two children born to Mrs. Tina Godfrey Callier-Elmore and Mr. Thurston Callier, Sr. As a devoted member of Thirgood Memorial CME Church, she is also a member of various church organizations and a consistent church volunteer.

As she was in her church community, Mrs. Callier-Colvin was very active in the Enon Ridge Community in which she resided for over 50 years and served as the devotional leader of the Enon Ridge 4 th Street Block Watch Committee. She was also very active in Birmingham's Civil Rights activities of the early 1960's.

Mrs. Callier-Colvin possessed a God given soul of goodness. And if you became her friend, you became "family". She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Tina Godfrey Callier-Elmore and Mr. Thurston Callier, Sr.; her husband, Mr. Monroe Colvin; her brother, Rev. Thurston Callier, Jr.; her nephew, Rev. Dr. Thurston Callier, III; She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted step-daughter, Linda Stamps Grace, step-son Billy Shelborne, her Grand-niece Martha McDowell; and her Grand-nephew Bryan Patrick Callier. She is survived by her Sister-in-law, Mrs. Bennie Ruth Callier-Sweeney; five Nieces and a Nephew and five Great Nieces, four Great Nephews, and two Great-grand Nieces.

The Family would like to acknowledge and thank the kind and compassionate Physicians, Nurses, and Staff of the University of Alabama Palliative Care Unit for their care of our loved one.
