Obituary

Martha Ann Wormely was born on September 14, 1940, in Trussville, Alabama, to the late Daisy Walker and Roosevelt Hammond Sr. She was the youngest of six children and accepted Christ at an early age, becoming a devoted servant and lifelong member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Trussville. Her service to the church included roles as a stewardess, choir member, and assisting with bookkeeping in the financial room whenever needed.

Martha attended and graduated from Moton High School in Leeds, Alabama, where she proudly served as a cheerleader. After graduation, her early adult years took her to Cleveland, Ohio, and Denver, Colorado, before returning home to care for her parents. She dedicated over thirty years to Beverly Healthcare Nursing Home in Trussville, beginning as a Certified Nursing Assistant and later serving as the local facility representative before blossoming into the role of Activities Coordinator until her retirement.

Her civic contributions were numerous—volunteering at the Trussville Community Center, singing with the Trussville Community Choir until its conclusion, and being a pillar for positive change in her community. Affectionately known as "Mom", "Grandma", or "G.G."

Martha was the family's source of wisdom—sometimes stern, sometimes humorous, but always foundational for generations to come.

Martha's love for cooking was evident as she rose early every Sunday to prepare meals before attending Sunday school and church. She enjoyed dressing up, wearing makeup, and keeping her nails polished. Even in her later years, she remained an avid dancer, teaching her grandchildren that she still had the moves. A devoted Auburn Tigers fan, she cheered for her team through good times and bad.

On Saturday, November 8, 2025, Martha gained her angel wings and departed this earthly life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daisy Walker and Roosevelt Hammond Sr.; her husband, Robert Pearl Wormely; her son, Kenneth Alexander Thigpen; three brothers, Roosevelt Hammond Jr. (Jannie), John Hammond (Edritch), and Clarence Hammond (Bessie Henderson); and two sisters, Marian Booker (Samson) and Marguerite Hammond.
