Martha Jane Deamues Copeland was born June 1, 1933, to Reverend Melton and Queen Esther Deamues in Tuskegee, Alabama. They moved to Birmingham Alabama in 1939, where she attended school in the Birmingham school system. She was united in marriage to Jimmy Copeland, and to their union, their son, George T. Copeland, was born. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Melton and Queen Esther Deamues; husband, Jimmy, in 2000; son, George, in 2007; sisters, Marjorie Harris and Loretta Hudson; and a brother, James Timothy Deamues. She made her transition on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

She leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter-in-law, Miss Shirley A. Copeland of San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, Mr. Ernest E. Copeland (Dr. Belinda D. Copeland) of White Sands Missile Range, NM, Mr. Christopher T. Copeland of Council Bluffs, IA, Ms. Erica R. Copeland and Mr. Eric Lamar Copeland of San Antonio, TX; and five great-grandchildren, Keisha, Isaiah, Mia, Diego, and Zolani Rose. She also leaves to cherish her memories: two sisters, Betty Williams and Mellonee Keisha; Isaiah, Mia, Diego, and Simon; one brother, William Deamues; five special nieces, Daphne Ray, Valerie King, Lavone Hawkins, Cassandra Williams, and Brenda Harris; other nieces, including Darlyn Hendricks, Jennifer Deamues, and Jane Deamues of Atlanta, GA; eight nephews, Fredrick Deamues, whom she affectionately called “Big Baby”, Milton Williams, Samuel C. Williams, William Charles Deamues, George Javis Harris, Christian Hendricks, Michael Deamues, Lonnie Deamues, and a special nephew, Takia Hudson; several great-nieces and nephews; special neighbors; and a host of friends. She also leaves a legacy of a village she helped raise with Mrs. Ida C. Wilson at Children House Preschool.
