Obituary

Marilyn Shivers Powe was the only child of Alma and Joseph Shivers. She was born in Birmingham, AL on February 27, 1940 and graduated from Parker High School with honors in 1958. Marilyn attended Fisk University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Later, she received a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from Samford University.
Marilyn was employed as a high school teacher in the Jefferson County School System in 1963, where she taught Biology and Secondary Science at Pittman Junior High and Hueytown High School. At an early age, Marilyn confessed Christ and became active in the church of her parents, Miller Memorial Presbyterian Church (now First United Presbyterian Church of Forestdale), where she served as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, member of the choir and of the Shepherding Committee. It was at church that she met the love of her life, Cleophus A. Powe, and married thereafter.
After retirement, Marilyn taught at Miles College and served as a volunteer with the Senior Citizen Program and with hospice. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Les Soeurs Social Club.
Marilyn departed this life on Thursday, December 8, 2016. She is survived by her husband; two sons Kevin (married to Donna) and Kenneth (married to Shellie); two grandsons, Kevin (married to Jasmine) and Matthew; and two great-grandchildren, Kevin and Kaliah.
Funeral services will be held at First United Presbyterian Church of Forestdale on Saturday, December 17 at 12:00 noon.
