Mamie Fail Brown Mason, age 90, of Birmingham Al, passed to her eternal reward on March 17th. Mrs. Mamie Fail Brown Mason graduated from Keith High school in Orrville, Al. After graduating she matriculated to Booker T. Washington Business College. She later went on to work for Booker T. Washington Insurance Company and also Protective life Insurance company. The Civil Rights Choir was organized at the special request of Mr. Fred Shuttles-worth, and assisting her in doing so was Deacon Nims Gay who is a Deacon of 46th Street Baptist Church, where her song is often played "I'm on my way to Freedom land". Later on Mrs. Mason resided in Los Angeles foe 30 years and was employed at Children's Hospital as payroll clerk. Years later she moved back to Birmingham, Alabama and started working from home as a healthcare consultant up until her retirement.
Mrs.Mason was an active member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church and the Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir. Mrs. Mamie Fail Brown Mason was very instrumental during the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement Ms. Mamie wrote and sang this song, "I'm on My Way To Freedom Land" Now it is available at Smithsonian. Valencia Reese McCurdy spoke about her and said nothing but good things and her impact in the Civil Rights Movement
"Mrs Mamie meant so much to so many people. She was a God fearing woman and a well respected Civil Rights Movement foot soldier. She made many sacrifices during the movement., and was the founder of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights Choir. She worked untiring with the Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir She was known for going to jail for our freedom and writing the lyrics to I'm on My Way to Freedom Land. She sang that with so much power She will be missed by the choir and the Reese Family". Kevin Lewis from the Metropolitan Area of WDC, spoke about Mrs. Mason as well " I would like to thank GOD for us meeting our first FOOT SOLDIER. Coming to Birmingham for my nephew Joshua Lewis Graduation to hear the Dean of Miles College speak on Foot Soldiers and for us to decide to go and eat at Jim And Nik's BBQ where I had the pleasure to Meet a Divine Beautiful and well spoken FOOT SOLDIER"
She leaves to mourn her memories: three sisters, Catherine Wilson of Orrville, AL; Bessie Jackson of Bronx, New York; Emma Berry of Birmingham, AL; one brother, Eugene Fail of Birmingham, AL and a host of nieces, nephews, God- children, God-grand children and friends. Visitation will be Friday, March 20th at Smith and Gaston Southside Funeral Home. A private burial will be Saturday at Zion Memorial Gardens at 12 noon.
