Dr. Kimberly Denise Froelich was born on March 27, 1967, in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Mr. Johnny Lee Hurst and Mrs. Elizabeth Carr-Hurst. She was a graduate of G.W. Carver High School in Montgomery, Alabama, class of 1985. Dr. Kimberly Froelich was a nursing leader in various roles throughout her 30 years of nursing. She was a 1991 graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, at which time she returned to Atlanta, where she was employed as a graduate nurse technician in the Medical and Coronary Care Intensive Care Units of the Atlanta VAMC.
She worked as a staff nurse at the Boston VAMC in the Surgical Intensive Unit, staff nurse at Klinikum Augustinum, Munich, Germany; staff nurse, nurse educator, and certified nurse practitioner at the North Florida/South Georgia VA Medical Center, Gainesville, Florida, before relocating to Birmingham, Alabama. She began her transition to the administrative role while working in the Business Management Service (BMS). As the nurse manager in the BMS, she initiated the Bed Board System, Bed Control, and Utilization Management programs.
In 2010, Dr. Froelich was selected into the Chief Nurse/Outpatient and Staff Development role. She was a proud and active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Dr. Froelich was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1993 to 2003. Kimberly departed from us on January 8, 2021, with her husband, mother, children, and aunt by her side.
She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Lee Hurst, brother, Jonathan Hurst, grandfather, Houston Carr, and uncle, Charlie Carr. She leaves to cherish her beautiful legacy and wonderful memories: her loving husband, Dr. Michael A. Froelich; two children, Morgan and Raphael Froelich; granddaughter, Rowan Elisabeth; mother, Elizabeth Carr-Hurst; sister, Rhonda Hurst; nephew, Christian; beloved grandmother, Lucinda Carr; mother and father-in-law, Gesine and Ottheinrich Froelich; sisters-in-law, Konstanze and Susanne Froelich; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. The family would also like to thank her Birmingham VA Medical Center co-workers for all of their support.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2021 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Smith & Gaston Southside Chapel, 102 - 6th Avenue SW, Birmingham, AL 35211. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Cummings Funeral Home, 1120 Bragg Street, Montgomery, AL 36108. Graveside service will be held Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Wright Chapel AME Zion Church in Lowndesboro, AL. Smith & Gaston Southside directing
