Katharine
Jackson
August 9, 1928 – June 23, 2023
Katharine Meanes Jackson was born August 9, 1928, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late
Mable L. Gregory and Ivory Meanes. She was the knee baby to her other siblings, the late George Meanes
and Minister Tommy D. Gregory, Sr. She was also blessed to have extended siblings (Grace, Cleophus,
Odessa, David, and Nathaniel) which in fact were her cousins, but they all grew up in the same household,
being raised by 'Little Ma'.
Katharine, affectionately called MaDear/Kat was a member of Payne Chapel A.M.E where she joined the
Keenager's group and served until the outbreak of COVID-19.
Katharine received her early education from Dora High School and matriculated to Alabama State
University in Montgomery, AL. Upon leaving college, she married the late Elbert Dobbins, Jr., and to
this union two children (Carol and Orlando) were born.
She later met and married the late Nick Jackson and to this union two more children (Muslim Harith
Fatin and the late Darius) were born. Katharine worked and retired from the Birmingham Board of
Education after 30 years of service. She departed this life on June 23, 2023 at home in Birmingham,
AL. She leaves to cherish her memories: a loving and devoted daughter, Carol (Robert, Jr.) and two
loving sons, Orlando and Muslim Harith Fatin; ten grandchildren, Aloysius, Tamiko, Enrico (Brenda),
Shauntese (Jesus), Simone, Athnus, Rayshun, DeQuacha, Maurice (Kim), and the late Orlando (Alice); 14
great-grandchildren, DeCarlos, Justin, Nyah, Sederick, Ayouna (JC), Kayla (Demetrice), Leah, Amber,
Dasha, Maurio, Mori, Tyteanna, Justin, and Jabari; six great-great grandchildren, Rhlani, Kaiden,
Karter, Nevah, Princeton, and Avi; she had a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
