Josephine J
Robinson
May 19, 1942 – February 5, 2023
Mrs. Josephine J. Robinson was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Evans (Jannie) Jones on May 19, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama. Her mother died two days after her baby sister, Bettie, was born, and Josephine was only nine years old. The girls were lovingly raised by their aunt and
maternal grandmother.
Josephine received Christ and joined Metropolitan C.M.E. Church at an early age. During her time there, she was a lady of service and action. She served on the Missionary Society (Chair of the Blanket Ministry) and Chair of the Stewardess Board, only retiring to care for her husband. She sang in the Senior Choir where she served as Treasurer and was Chair of the Lay Department. "Jo," as family and friends affectionately called her, attended Council Elementary School and graduated from Western-Olin High School in 1960. She attended Talladega College for two years where she pledged the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She later graduated from business college in Birmingham. Josephine would marry her sweetheart, Clarence Robinson, in 1963, and they remained lovingly committed until his death in 2003. For years, she worked at U.S. Steel in Fairfield and
went on later to work for the Jefferson County Department of Revenue and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. She retired in 2002.
Jo was a beautiful spirit and loved life. Being in her presence was always fun. She appreciated the arts and music was a special outlet for her. In her early 60s, she shocked her niece by asking to attend the Prince concert! Jo was a proud breast cancer survivor and supporter. She loved her family and always showed up at gatherings with a loving, fun energy.
She will be so missed. Her parents, two sisters, Maxine Charles Smith and Elizabeth Charles Rather, preceded her in death; her brother, David Mathis, also preceded her in death.
Her legacy of love includes her lovingly devoted sister, Bettie Jones Smith; brother, Tommie (Linda) Charles; nieces, Maxine Jones, Angela Rather Johnson, Kristy Rather Hall, Stacy Daniels, and Lametra (Eric) Baker; nephews, Willie J. Smith, Eric Charles, Michael (Latricia) Rather, Willie
(Donna) May, Jr., and Timothy Smith; sisters-in-law, Claudell Robinson and Maxine (Willie) May; goddaughter, Vanessa Wilson; godson, Brantley (Renarda) Dumas; and many other family members and friends.
