Jorita Spencer
Blackmon
February 4, 1958 – October 11, 2024
Life and Legacy
Jorita Francine Spencer Blackmon, aged 66, transitioned on October 11, 2024. She was a beloved mother, devoted wife, grandmother, aunt, cousin, niece, in-law, and friend. Her vivacious zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Jorita was born on February 4, 1958, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the loving union of Joseph Lovell Spencer and Bernice Ware Spencer, both of whom preceded her in death.
Her spiritual journey began at Rushing Spring Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor F. J. Herron. There, she actively participated in Sunday School, Youth and Adult Bible studies, choirs, and served as an usher.
Spending her formative years in the Oak Ridge Park community of Birmingham, Jorita was an intelligent and outgoing young lady. She attended Oliver Elementary School and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1976. Afterward, she matriculated at Alabama A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1981.
On June 15, 1985, Jorita was joined in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Forrest Blackmon, who preceded her in death. They were blessed to share twenty-nine wonderful years of marriage. To this union, there was one daughter, Raven Symone Blackmon.
She retired from the Social Security Administration in 2007 after being employed for 24 years as a Contact Service Representative. Throughout her career, she was known for her hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. Like her parents, she often used her knowledge to assist family and friends when needed.
Jorita could not be a stranger to anyone for long; she was known for striking up a conversation anytime and anywhere. She loved spending time with her friends and family, often hosting celebratory events at her home. She favored—and often mastered—thought-provoking games and puzzles. Since her youth, she had a flair for fashion and truly loved shopping. A favorite to all who knew her, she was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement.
She leaves to cherish her memory to her daughter, Raven Blackmon; her grandsons, Dee Blackmon, Jacob Millhouse and Jamari Blackmon; her brothers, Bernard D. (Amanda "Liz") Spencer and K. Lovell Spencer; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who will fondly miss her.
