Obituary

Viewing will be held Friday, January 21, 2022, from noon until 6:00 P.M. Funeral will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022, 12:00 P.M. at Zion Spring Baptist Church with burial in Zion Memorial Garden.

On May 21, 1937, Jessie Mae Brunson Smith was born in Sumter county, Alabama, to the late Ms. Lula Brunson and Mr.
Chester Brown. In the late forties, Ms. Brunson decided to move the family to Birmingham, where Jessie and her siblings received their education in the Birmingham school system. Jessie joined the Zion Spring Baptist church under the leadership of Reverend E.J. Minniefield in 1950. She served faithfully, until her health began failing.

In Birmingham, Jessie Brunson met the love of her life, Mr. LaGranus Smith. She married Mr. Smith on December 22, 1951.
In this union, there were three children: Larry, Donell, and Cathy Smith. Jessie was employed at Cooper Green Hospital Cafeteria as a  dietician from 1974 to 1996. She retired with 22 years of service. Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, LaGranus Smith; two children, Larry Smith and Cathy E Streeter; granddaughter, Ashaki Smith; and two siblings, James Brunson and Willie Mae Lightfoot.


She leaves to cherish memories: son, Donell (Ruthie) Smith; goddaughter, Patricia (Jeffrey) Walker; daughter–in-law, Diane Smith; son-in-law, Jimmy Streeter; sisters-in-law, Annie Nix, Ollie Brunson, and Dorothy Duddley; brother-in-law, Melvin Smith; grandchildren, Kevin Smith, Rhonda Handy, Jacqueline (Steve) Nash, LaDonna (Olen) Tucker, Candace (George) Daniels, Jaleesa Smith, Jessica and Jasmine Walker; great grandchildren, Cerenati Daniels, George Daniels, Jenasis Nash, Donovan Tucker, Johnathan Tucker, Jelani Smith, Jayla Smith, Daniel Kelly, and
DeShawn Handy; niece, Theresa Brunson; two nephews, Kenneth Brunson and Butch; and a host of other family and friends.
