Henry Allen
Turner, Jr.
September 2, 1946 – August 11, 2023
Henry Allen Turner, Jr., affectionately known as Dee, came into this world on
September 2, 1946, in Cleveland, OH. He was the second child born to the union of
Henry A. Turner, Sr., and Mary Emma Shy, who preceded him in death.
Dee graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland, OH, in 1965 and
attended John Carroll University in University Heights, OH. Dee was a mentor,
loving, and respected. He uplifted every life he touched.
While working as a waiter at Kirtland Country Club (Willoughby Hills, OH) with his
dad, opportunities opened for him. Dee's kind demeanor caught the attention of
member Maynard Murch. Mr. Murch opened the door for him to become a bonded
messenger for his investment and stock brokerage firm Maynard H. Murch, Co.,
later becoming the first Black stock broker for the company.
On October 14, 1967, Dee became a part of the brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc. He served as president of the pledge club, known as the Lampados
Club. In 1969, he helped establish the Kent State University chapter and was
responsible for founding several other chapters across Ohio.
Dee navigated a new career at Bendix Corporation as a purchasing manager for
automotive system parts. Dee's disposition allowed him to move to the American
Honda Motor Company, where he spent over twenty years as a purchasing
manager. He started at the Marysville Automotive Plant in Ohio and spearheaded
the opening of the Lincoln, Alabama plant. Despite moving to Birmingham, he
remained an avid Cleveland sports fan.
In 2008, Dee was asked to join the Board of Directors at Southern States Bank. In
2011, he became the Executive Director of the Southern Region Minority Business
Development Agency (SRMBD) and later the ED of the Southern Region Minority
Business Council (SRMBC).
Dee was an avid lover of the arts and served as President of the African American
Art Committee for the Birmingham Art Museum. His passion for art fueled his
fondness for travel, which presented the chance to visit museums around the world
and collect art from across the globe. He also loved music, especially jazz.
Dee leaves behind a cherished legacy. He is survived by his loving wife, Michelle
"Shelley" Turner née Robinson, two beautiful daughters, Lauren Ashley Turner and
Morgan Ryann Robinson, his sister Patricia McGlown née Turner, brother-in-law
Leroy "Mac" McGlown, a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
