Gussie Lee Crocker was born in Lumpkin, Georgia on March 1, 1920 to Gus and Lessie Crocker. She was the second of three siblings. When Gussie was 3 years of age, the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama. Later at age 8 years, they moved to Hooper City.
How often have we heard her reminisce about the distance she walked and walked and walked to her different schools, (contributing to her lack of walking in later years), going as far as Rosedale High. But praise to God a new High School was built in Hooper City and Gussie was among the first graduating class of 1936.
Gussie enrolled in Stillman College only for a short time. Jacqueline was born.
Later Gussie married Charles Chambliss who had a daughter named Mary Lee. She resided in Detroit, Michigan for 2 years.
Once returning from Michigan, she found some work doing private duty, etc. She worked many years at Children's Home Hospital. There she decided to do more, she enrolled at Western Olive Trade and earned her LVN license.
Gussie and Clinton Mattison were married in 1953 and spent over 50 years together. Above all Gussie has been a member of First Missionary Baptist of Hooper City for 86 years. That's a blessing.
Her attributes besides being a Christian, she was also a Great Mother, Grandmother, good cook of her famous Sweet Potato Pies, and she was a stylish dresser.
