Obituary

Mr. George W. Woods, age 90, died at his home in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday June 17, 2016. He was the last survivor of the three children (the late Ruth W. Jones and the late Charles B. Woods) by the late Cornelius Woods and Gertrude A. Brown.
Born on September 29, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama where he lived until he was inducted into the Army of the United States as a Private First Class Solider on December 6, 1943 at the age of 18, stationed at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. He begin his active duty on December 27, 1943 and participated in the Battle and Campaign of Normandy, Northern France GO 105 WD 45 and was honorably discharged from the Army on January 20, 1946. He received the following decoration and citations: European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his military career he returned to Birmingham, Alabama and worked in the construction industry until his retirement.
Survivors include: his son Ernest A. Hester of Atlanta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Richard and Patricia Ann Deloach of Birmingham AL; Son and daughter he chose to take on, Vera Tolbert, David Hester, Betty Hester, late David Hester, Robert Hester, Cleo Hester, Neal Trumer and a host of grandchildren.
Family Hour will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2016 from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Smith & Gaston Southside Chapel. Graveside service will be held Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Elmwood Cemetery. Smith & Gaston Southside directing.
