Elma Jean Fowler Mathis

Obituary

Elma Jean Fowler Mathis was born November 1, 1936. She was a lifelong member of Sardis Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, usher, budget committee member, Young at Heart senior ministry, Progressive Matrons missionary ministry, and director of Domestic Missions.

She was a 1954 graduate of A. H. Parker High School and she later studied at Booker T. Washington Business College.

Mrs. Mathis retired after 42 years of service at Southside Baptist Church. In recent years she served as a volunteer for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, United Way of Central Alabama, and the local and state AARP offices.

Loving and cherished memories are left with her son, Melvin Fowler; daughters Ruby (Murray) Lewis and Wanda Fowler; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five nieces; one nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.
