Heaven called Edith D. Scott home on April 23, 2018. She was born on April 29, 1937 in Birmingham, AL and was the first-born child of the late Thelma Doyle Davis and James W. Davis, Sr.. Three brothers preceded her in death. She attended Patterson Elementary School and was a graduate of A. H. Parker High School, Class of 1955.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Albert Scott Jr. and to their union five children were born.
She continued her education at the Asbury Park Business College, Asbury Park, New Jersey. She also attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In 1956, she became the first black office worker of a sportswear manufacturer in Long Branch, New Jersey. For 36 years she was a valuable, hardworking employee of the Social Security Administration in Birmingham, AL and in the state of Maryland.
She was a devoted member of Old Ship A.M.E. Zion Church where she worked in many areas of the church; as an usher, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Director of Christian Education, choir member and a mentor to many. Her church affiliations also include Brownsville United Methodist Church and One Zion A.M.E. Zion Church where she served faithfully in various capacities.
She was a past president of the Parker High School Alumni Class of 1955.
Her love for hats lead her to use her God given talent as a designer of women's hats. For several years she was an entrepreneur of her own designed hats, jewelry and hair bows through her company Creations until her health failed.
Family Visitation will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Smith and Gaston Funeral Home. Graveside Service of Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Zion Memorial Gardens.
Treasuring her precious memories are her five devoted children: Anna Yvette McMullen (Lamar), Antoinette Green-Brown (Darryl) of New Orleans, LA; Albertina Scott, Alvin Scott of Fort Worth, TX, and Anthony Scott; devoted friends, Debra Scott and Carol Linwood; seven loving grandchildren: Chandra McMullen, Stephanie Green (Dwight) of Monroe, La, Jason McMullen of Nashville, TN; Marcus Green and Myron Green of New Orleans, LA, Dr. Jelaina Scott of Chattanooga, TN, Justine Scott of Atlanta, GA; three great-grandchildren: Radaveon Davis and Kyron Davis, of West Monroe, La and Myron Green III of New Orleans, LA; one great-great grandchild, Kasen Davis; one sister, Wilma J. Davis; one brother-in-law, Dr. George Z. Scott; a host of nieces and nephews; her Old Ship church family; devoted and wonderful care sitters: JoAnn Dillard and Nina Harris; Primary Care Physician Dr. Kennedy Kunz; and other special friends and family.
All females are requested to wear a hat in loving memory and honor of Mrs. Scott.
