Obituary

Cynthia R. DuBose, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, departed this life on May 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, talent, and unwavering dedication to service.

Born on November 25, 1953, to Lawyer DuBose and Martha DuBose, Cynthia was a proud native of Alabama. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1972 and continued her education at Talladega College, earning her degree in 1976. Her commitment to education and community uplift laid the foundation for a life devoted to both service and spiritual enrichment.

Cynthia's professional journey was marked by more than three decades of devoted work as a social worker with the State of Alabama Department of Human Resources. Her service extended to roles as a court coordinator and later as a compassionate advocate for the elderly at Ball Healthcare Retirement Home. She also served as a certified notary public, bringing integrity and trust to every interaction.

A woman of deep faith and extraordinary musical talent, Cynthia was a dedicated member and Minister of Music at Greater 14th Street Baptist Church, where she shared her gifts with grace and humility. She also served faithfully as a vocalist and instrumentalist—mastering the organ, piano, clarinet, and other woodwind instruments—at churches including New St. Mark AME, First Baptist Graysville, First Baptist Fairfield, First Baptist Roosevelt City, Zion Travelers Primitive Baptist Church, and St. Matthews Baptist Church. Her music uplifted the spirits of many and was a cherished part of her ministry.

Cynthia was a devoted mother to two sons, Kellen and Corey Higginbotham, and a loving grandmother to her treasured granddaughter, Cayleigh Higginbotham. She is also survived by her brother Bernard DuBose, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will continue to celebrate her life and legacy. She was preceded in death by her brothers Wilbert DuBose and Herman Carnes.

Known for her wisdom and humor, Cynthia often reminded those around her to "KISS—Keep it simple, stupid," and encouraged perseverance with the words, "Don't nothing beat a failure but a try." These sayings, reflective of her straightforward yet nurturing spirit, will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.

Cynthia R. DuBose's life was a testament to faith, family, music, and selfless service. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
