Obituary

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, our beloved Mr. Clarence English passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 13, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama, Clarence was the cherished son of Mr. Vann English Sr. and Mrs. Gurtha English, both of whom preceded him in death. He was one of eleven siblings, and was also preceded in death by his brothers Vann Jr., Theodore, Eugene, Maurrell, Cecil, Harold, Timothy, Freddie, and his sister Roberta. He leaves behind his devoted sister Jacqueline, who will continue to honor his memory.

Clarence spent several years in California, where he welcomed his daughter Gillian. He later returned to Birmingham and married his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Marjorie English. Together, they raised their son Clinton, along with Rhonitha, Keith, and Bridget, who also preceded him in death.

Clarence was a proud graduate of Ullman High School, part of the Birmingham City Schools system. He later gave back to that same community by working for the Birmingham Board of Education, where he cared deeply for the children he served.

When Marjorie's eldest daughter Bridget passed away, leaving behind two children, Clarence and Marjorie stepped in without hesitation to raise Corey and Shakeitha as their own. Clarence's love extended far beyond his immediate family.

Clarence and Marjorie shared a lifelong love, remaining devoted to one another until her passing in 2019. Even after her death, Clarence kept her memory alive, speaking often of his love for her and sharing stories with younger generations.

Clarence remained active in his later years, taking walks, riding his bicycle, and enjoying visits from his nieces Terry and Regina. Though many of his relatives lived outside Birmingham, Clarence stayed connected with them, cherishing their visits and calls. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church West Princeton, where he found community and spiritual strength. Even when he could no longer attend in person, church members visited him regularly, a testament to the love and respect he inspired.

In his final years, Clarence expressed a strong desire to remain at home, a wish lovingly fulfilled by Rhonitha, Montriese, and Mikeiya, who became his primary caregivers.

Clarence's memory will be forever cherished by his children Gillian and Clinton (Darlene), and by those he raised as his own, Rhonitha and Keith Collins. He is also survived by his sister Jacqueline who resides in Los Angeles, California along with 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

We celebrate the remarkable life Clarence lived, a life full of love, service, and devotion and we look forward to the day we will see him again.
