Boykin Luverne
Hunter, Sr.
March 6, 1931 – August 15, 2023
OBITUARY
Boykin Luverne Hunter, Sr., "Bubba," "Bo," "Jab," "Jabo," was born March 6,
1931, to Mr. Boykin Franklin Hunter and Mary Hunter. He was the youngest of eight children. He
attended Emanuel Brown Training School. He accepted Christ at an early age at Saint Paul Baptist
Church in Minter, Alabama. He later joined Saint Joseph Missionary Baptist Church under the
leadership of Reverend Richard Cunningham. He was a faithful member serving on the usher
board and enjoyed attending Sunday School. He respected his pastors and truly loved his church
family. He was the oldest member of Saint Joseph Missionary Baptist Church.
Before moving to Birmingham, he worked in construction helping to build the "Seven Bridges"
in Camden, Alabama. At the age of 26, he moved to Birmingham with the love of his life, Zellena
Cosey Hunter. To this union, nine children were born. He was the epitome of a devoted, loving,
hardworking husband and father. He loved the "Smithfield" community, later moving his family
to College Hills in 1964. He was a wonderful father who provided for every need of his wife and
children. He was a man who deeply loved and cared for his family and friends. At the beck of a
midnight call, he and his brothers, George and Leroy, would drive to Minter to meet the needs
of their parents. He had great pleasure in working to take care of his family. He believed that a
man should work and provide for his family. He worked and retired from US Steel in Fairfield,
Alabama, after 35 years of service. After retirement, he worked many years at 4th Avenue Shell and
was called "Cuz" by many employees and customers. He had and gave his love to many, making
everyone feel special. He never missed voting in an election. He was grateful and elated when
Mayor Randall Woodfin came to his home for his 92nd birthday celebration in March of 2023.
His interests and hobbies included hunting, fitness work-out routines, working on cars, and
enjoying the pleasure of a "good Tampa Nugget cigar" every now and then. He enjoyed wearing
his Stacy Adams shoes and clothing and eating some good, hot fried bream and catfish.
Throughout his life, he kept his faith in Christ, fought a good fight, and finished the race. He
transitioned peacefully at Saint Vincent Hospital on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 7:56 PM. He was
preceded in death by his parents; wife, Zellena; twin sons, Calvin and Melvin Hunter; daughter,
Tonja Hunter; son, Marzell Hunter; and siblings, Wilmore, Effie Hunter, Louella Hunter, Leroy
Hunter, George Hunter, Abbie Shields, and Rachel Haynes.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his five devoted and loving children, daughters, Juanita Hunter
