Bonnye Ruth Stitt was born September 14, 1955 to the late
Irene Stitt. Her uncles, Emory Stitt and Louis Stitt, Jr., both served
with honor and distinction in the U.S. Armed Forces before
returning to civilian life to work and start families. As the only
child among three close sisters, Bonnye was blessed with three
mothers - her mom, Irene and her loving and doting aunts, Bernice
Stitt Hendricks and Dollie Stitt. Bonnye stood on a firm foundation
of love, service, education and faith laid for her by her Stitt family
and there, she flourished.
Bonnye attended grade school at Lewis Elementary and Parker
High School, both in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduating high
school in 1973, she attended the University of Miami where she
completed her undergraduate studies with a Bachelor's degree in
mathematics. She later received her Master's degree, also in
mathematics, from the University of Michigan.
I want you to know how safe and secure you are in My Presence. That is a fact,
totally independent of your feelings. You are on your way to heaven; nothing can
prevent you from reaching that destination. There you will see Me face to Face, and
your Joy will be off the charts by earthly standards. Even now, you are never
separated from Me, though you must see Me through eyes of faith. I will walk with
you till the end of time, and onward into eternity.
Although My Presence is a guaranteed promise, that does not necessarily
change your feelings. When you forget I am with you, you may experience loneliness
or fear. It is through awareness of My Presence that Peace displaces negative
feelings. Practice the discipline of walking consciously with Me through each day.
Her mother and aunts were devout followers of Christ and
introduced Bonnye at an early age to the teachings and loving ways
of Jesus. Bonnye, her mother and her aunt were fixtures at Mason
Chapel United Methodist Church, where they gave generously of
their time, talents and resources and where they were richly
rewarded with the spiritual leadership, guidance and affection that
can only come from a loving church family.
After a successful and rewarding career as a computer analyst
and programmer, Bonnye returned to Birmingham following an
accident that rendered her legally blind. She was home after many
years building a career that spanned decades and which took her
all over the United States and all over the world. Bonnye refused to
let disability stop her from living her life. She maintained her
independence and autonomy and even in retirement continued to
thrive personally and professionally. She was a prolific and
accomplished writer; those poems she sent to us were more than
just a hobby for the holidays. Bonnye had been invited to submit
her work to a prominent publishing house. Bonnye was also a
classically trained pianist, an avid reader, a family genealogist and
historian and an all-around Renaissance woman of learning and
faith.
When the spectre of cancer loomed, Bonnye did what Bonnye
does best – she prayed and she researched. She did her homework
and she fought a valiant fight in the face of not one but two
frightening diagnoses. It was a fight that concluded with Bonnye
attaining Heaven and the Comfort and Joy of our Savior. Bonnye
Won. In the early morning hours of Saturday May 19, 2018,
Bonnye slipped from the grip of cancer and floated into the loving
arms of the Lord where she now rests. She is preceded in death by
her mother Irene Stitt, uncles Emory Stitt, Sr. and Louis Stitt, Jr.
and aunt Dollie Stitt.
