Bessie Nell Hendrix

December 28, 1934 – July 26, 2026

“A life measured not only by years, but by faith, family, and love.”

On December 28, 1934, God blessed Mack and Lula Mae Hendrix with twin daughters. The younger of the two was Bessie Nell Hendrix, affectionately known as “Nell.” From the very beginning, she shared a remarkable bond with her twin sister, Betty Jane—a bond of love, friendship, and devotion that lasted more than ninety-one years.

Bessie accepted Christ at an early age and united with First Baptist Church, Mulga, under the leadership of Rev. W. E. Jackson. Later, she faithfully worshiped at Peace Baptist Church, Mulga, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Larry Batie, where her quiet faith continued to shine.

She attended Mulga Elementary School and graduated from Westfield High School with the Class of 1952. She later moved to New York City, where she served as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), compassionately caring for others. After returning to Birmingham, she faithfully worked at Berthon’s Dry Cleaners until her retirement.

Though Bessie never married or had children of her own, her life was rich with family. She dearly loved her nieces and nephews and embraced the family of her beloved twin sister as her own. She celebrated Betty’s sons, Alfonzo Hendrix, Thomas Lewis, and Michael Lewis; Betty’s thirteen grandchildren; and her many great-grandchildren, loving each of them with all her heart.

Even in her later years, Bessie remained a quiet leader. While residing at Oak Knoll Nursing Facility, she was elected President of the Patient Society, a reflection of the respect and affection she earned from those around her.

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, God gently called His faithful servant home. Her life was marked by kindness, humility, compassion, and unwavering faith. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love will continue in the lives she touched.

Bessie leaves to cherish her memory her devoted twin sister, Betty Jane Hendrix; her brother, Robert Hendrix of Detroit, Michigan; her beloved nephews, Alfonzo Hendrix, Thomas Lewis, and Michael Lewis, all of Birmingham, Alabama; Betty’s thirteen grandchildren and her many great-grandchildren, all of whom Bessie loved dearly; her many nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, relatives, and cherished friends.
