Bernice G. Wilson was born to the late William Golson and Viola Steele Golson on April 21, 1931, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the youngest of ten children, seven sisters and two brothers who preceded her in death. She transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
Bernice accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized into the fellowship of the Historic Holt Street Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Dr. A.W. Wilson, in Montgomery, Alabama. Her God-given talents were shared with the church family as a dedicated member and servant in Sunday School, as well as a student and adult teacher. She also served in the Missionary Society from Sunbeam to Adult General Mission. Her service included Sunday School and Baptist Training Union musician, choir director, member of the usher board, Trustee, Minister of Christian Education. Bernice served as Coordinator of Finance for the Alabama Baptist Women's Convention for almost years.
Mrs. Wilson graduated from Loveless High School and continued her education at Alabama State College where she graduated with a degree in Education and Music. A master's degree was earned at the University of Arizona with further studies at the University of Alabama- Birmingham, University of Nebraska, Abilene Christian College, Birmingham Easonian Baptist Bible College.
Bernice, a retired educator of forty-one years, served in school systems of Alabama, Texas, Arizona, and Nebraska, Alabama State University, and the University of Arizona. She taught various subjects including music, government, reading, and Language Arts. On the university level, Bernice supported pre-service educators and other students as a Student Teacher Supervisor and Humanities teacher. She retired from the Hoover City School system in Alabama.
She loved decorating, cooking, gardening, reading, music, and teaching. Her memberships included Harmony Street Missionary Baptist Church, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (seventy-five years), Progressive Baptist Ministers' Wives & Widows Fellowship, and Pilgrim Readers. Her volunteering extended to serving as a Cadet Girl Scout Leader, president of the North Avondale Neighborhood Association for ten years, Birmingham Public Schools, and many other community organizations.
Bernice married her childhood sweetheart, Earnest Blevins (EB) Wilson on November 28, 1957, in Montgomery, Alabama. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2004. The late Dr. Earnest Blevins Wilson, Lt. Colonial USAF (retired), was the Pastor Emeritus of the Harmony Street Baptist Church. Mrs. Wilson was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, adopted mother, and aunt. She dedicated her life to helping others. Highlights of her life were traveling with her husband (military and family vacations), receiving many awards, and serving as a Youth Leader in Alabama, Texas, Nebraska, and Arizona.
Mrs. Wilson leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Phyllis Walton and Ernestine Wilson; grandchildren, Earnest Zachary Walton (Felicia) and Dana Bernice Walton; great-grandchildren Zoie Aeryn Walton and Earnest Zakai Walton; nieces, Mary Frances Alexander, Josephine
Bradley, Shirley Lewis, and Viola Bradford; nephews, Carmen (Vanessa) Young, Willie F. Gamble, Lagarette Gamble; cousins, great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
