On January 26, 1928, Arthur L. Jones was born to the late Arthur L. Jones and Reathie Harris Jones in Lowndes County, AL.
He confessed Christ at an early age. As a teenager his family relocated to Birmingham, AL
from Lowndes County, AL and joined 23rd Street Missionary Baptist Church South under
Rev. Reddick. As an adult, under Rev O.D. Jones Arthur served on the Usher Board,
where he was voted as president of the Usher Board/Floor Marshall. He served for many
years with pride and dedication as unto the Lord Jesus Christ. He loved the Lord with his
whole heart and it showed in his servitude to Jesus Christ, his church and his family. He
was a man that loved others as Christ loved the Church.
In 1952 he was drafted into the United States Army as a driver to his commanding
officers. He was honorably discharged June 24, 1954.
He was employed as a Crusher/Conveyor Operator involved in coal handling activities
for Alabama Power Company for 27 years. In 1978 he transferred from Greene County
to Miller Steam Plant, which made him one of the charter members of the Coal Handling
Group. He was respected and admired by the employees for his quiet, professional
manner while exemplifying the spirit of excellence for any and all assigned task. They
nicknamed him "Mr. Dependable", always going beyond the call of duty. Arthur was
very conscientious about his job which caused Alabama Power Company to salute him
as the Coal Handling Employee of the Month.
Arthur Jones departed this life on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. He was preceded in death
by his parents, Arthur L. Jones and Reathie Harris Lyles. Brother, Anderson Jones; Sister,
Henrietta Doton; and Son, Virgil Jones.
He leaves to cherish his memories; long-time loving and devoted companion, Mildred
Truss. Sister, Kathleen (Andrew) Hawkins; Brother, Clyde (Kelly) Bogan. Theresa Jackson
and one nephew Anton Jones. He was a loving, caring, and compassionate father not
only to his biological children Annie (Alfonzo) Myers, and Paul (Jennifer) Jones; One
granddaughter, Cotrina (Gary) Reed; and one grandson, Alfonzo Myers. But also to other
children who referred to him as daddy and granddaddy, i.e. Barbara Davis Joseph
Rudolph and Connie who preceded him in death; ten grandchildren, four great
grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
