Obituary

Mrs. Annie Lou Battle Peevy, daughter of the late James Battle and Otilure Days Battle, was born November 11, 1920 in Pine Level, Alabama. She attended Alabama public schools in Montgomery and Jefferson Counties and graduated from Industrial High School, which is
currently known as A. H. Parker High School. In 1946, she graduated from Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and later joined First Memorial Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member. At First Memorial, she served faithfully as a superintendent, teacher, playwright and creative director of many bible-based dramatizations presented for and during Sunday and Vacation Bible School program activities. She also sang in the Mass choir and joined her matron group on weekends, to evangelize and serve the local Norwood Community.


She was united in holy matrimony on December 22, 1940, to Mr. Alfred Houston Peevy. This 73-year union was blessed with two children. Mr. Peevy preceded her in death on March 18, 2014.


Mrs. Peevy was known for her beautifully rich contralto singing voice and was artistically inspired by singer Marian Anderson. Annie freely shared her talent with the community, both in churches and public venues in the greater Birmingham area She also recorded two 78 RPM songs, My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me and The Lord's Prayer. Professionally, she worked as a third-grade teacher for 33 years at Lewis Elementary
School and was named Birmingham Public Schools' Teacher of the Year in 1979 resulting in her being inducted into the Alabama Teacher Hall of Fame. Currently Annie is a proud member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association. Due to her generous spirit, vibrant personality, and genuine love for people and God, she was also well loved and treasured by many. Her Christian life was evident, her love and prayers for her family were constant, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She peacefully transcended this earthly life Monday, April 29, 2024 at home in Helena, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her son, Alfred Henry Peevy on September 19, 2003.


Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her daughter, Dr. Jemmie Peevy Hawkins of Helena, Alabama; grandchildren including Ms. Susan Yvette Peevy of Rockville,Maryland, Mrs. Ernesta Peevy Stewart (Ian) of London, England, Ms. Tracie Taylor Barnes of Johns Creek, Georgia, Mr. Alfred DeWayne Peevy (Allison) of Chicago, Illinois; great-grand children including Kaitlyn Mines, Savannah Stewart, Brooke Barnes, Braden Peevy, and Drew Barnes. She also leaves a host of devoted cousins, an extended family, and friends.
