Obituary

Andre Gilchrist was born Aug. 24,1959 in Birmingham, Ala., to the late Irene Gilchrist Holmes and the late David Scott. He transitioned to Eternal Life on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024 at the age of 64.

A longtime resident of Hoover, Andre attended Councill School and graduated in 1977 from P.D. Jackson-Olin High School in Ensley.

He served two tours of duty in the United States Army in Germany and elsewhere in Europe operating heavy equipment, and served more than a decade in the U.S. Army Reserve in Birmingham. He will be buried with military honors in Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Ala.
Following his service in the U.S. Armed Forces, Andre became a driver for United Parcel Service and retired from UPS after a 20-year career.
Andre Gilchrist had a true love for amatuer and team sports, and from a young age in the Shady Side community played on numerous baseball, softball and football teams. He was a founder and manager of McAlpine Mens and Womens Softball League, and his teams won many trophies and interstate competitions. The McAlpine Coed League grew in size and popularity and eventually moved from Ensley to Birmingham's George Ward Park off Green Springs Highway.


A man of deep faith, Andre joined in membership at New Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang with the Male Chorus. He became a deacon of the church in Spring 2019 and served as an assistant superintendent of the Sunday School.

Andre is survived by his wife, Charlene Gilchrist; his son, LeNorris Andre Gilchrist; his stepson, Victor M. Smith Jr., and stepdaughter, Jantzen Smith Nalls; his brothers, Theodore Gilchrist (Sylvia), James Edwin Gilchrist, Dwight Gilchrist and Derrick, Keith and Eric Holmes; his sisters, Phyllis A. Gilchrist, Barbara Gilchrist McQueen (Woodrow McQueen Jr.) and Josephine Holmes; his special cousins and a host of nephews, nieces, family members and friends.

Andre was preceded in death by his brothers, Columbus Gilchrist Jr., Tyrone Gilchrist, Harold Gilchrist, Michael Holmes and his stepfather, Alexander Holmes Jr.
