Alice Pierce
Rose
February 28, 1928 – October 14, 2025
Alice Mae Sanders Pierce was born in Birmingham to Annie Sanders February 29th, 1928 (leap day). Alice was a young child when her mother passed and then was adopted by her mother's sister and brother in law Willie N Pierce and Leola Sanders Pierce. Alice accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She became a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church under Rev Dr N. H. Smith in the early 1960s.
Alice received her education, trade skill set, unmatched penmanship and diploma from the esteemed A. H. Parker High School.
She was employed with SCLC Birmingham Chapter and became heavily involved in the movement, and is noted as a Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement. Alice was also involved in the political arena on every level from community to city, state and national. Working on political campaigns of Dr Richard Arrington Jr. as well as Rev Jesse Jackson. She encouraged everyone around her to vote and often volunteered at the polls during elections. She cast her last ballot during the 2024 Presidential election. She was loved by many political figures in our city, especially former Birmingham mayor William Bell and he made visits to see her often over the years.
Alice sense of fashion was admired, and she was always know as the "Hat Lady" Therefore she was destined to grace the cover of Julie Moos' photography book titled Hat Ladies in 2002. This work was on exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art and other famous art museums across the country.
Alice birth 11 children and fostered/raised 3 sons as her own. She was also loved and respected by many in her Ensley Community, especially those in Tuxedo Court that looked at her as a mother figure as well.
Children proceeding her in death are daughter Gloria P Hall, Cedric P Rose(Robin) of Ft Walton FL, Samuel Pierce, and Anthony Mays, as well as 3 grandchildren.
Those left to remember her memories are her sons Charles(Corliss)Pierce, Milton(Barbara)Rose of Augusta, GA, John Rose of Orlando, FL, Michael(Diane)Mays of South Carolina, Allen(Kristi)Mays, Darrick Pierce, and Derrick Pierce. Her daughters, Joyce Pierce, Sandra Finch, and Yolanda Rose. As well as 33 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and a few great great-grandchildren, extended family, dedicated friends, colleagues, and neighbors along with the staff at Faush Metropolitian Manor in Woodlawn.
